SAP Announces Genomic Research Collaboration with Stanford School of Medicine

May 29th, 2014

SAP has announced a strategic collaboration with Stanford School of Medicine. The collaboration will aim at researching the contribution of genetics, environmental exposures, behavior and other factors to disease susceptibility using the power of the SAP HANA platform. The company has also announced that it will be participating in the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, which is a council of industry leaders working toward accelerating global efforts to responsibly share and analyze large amounts of genomic and clinical data.
SAP’s collaboration with Stanford School of Medicine aims at achieving better understanding of global human genome variation and its implications in disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. The collaboration will be led by Carlos D. Bustamante, professor and director of the Stanford Center for Computational, Human and Evolutionary Genomics; Euan A. Ashley, associate professor of Medicine and Genetics; and Atul J. Butte, associate professor of Pediatrics and Genetics aims to advance genomics research in the clinical environment, eventually leading to improved healthcare and personalized medicine.
Researchers have already implemented SAP HANA to substantiate the results of a study which discovered that the genetic risk of Type II Diabetes varies between populations. They studied 12 genetic variants previously associated with Type II Diabetes across 49 individuals. With SAP HANA, researchers in Dr. Butte’s lab were able to simultaneously query all 125 genetic variants which were previously associated with Type II Diabetes across 629 individuals. Using traditional methods, this type of analysis would have taken an unreasonable amount of time.

Why Quality Assurance Testing is Worth the Investment

May 20th, 2014

To some companies, website and software quality assurance (QA) seems like an area that can be cut when budgets are tight. The problem is, without QA, you are sending your customers headfirst into an untested product. Would you sell a car before ever test driving it? Probably not. Why? Because it’s not worth taking the chance that the product is faulty. A faulty car would reflect poorly on your entire brand, not to mention be potentially dangerous. If a first-time customer is the one who discovers the faults, you’ve probably lost them forever. Repeat customers may give you the benefit of the doubt, but not forever. Patience is finite.
Whether you do QA testing or hire it out, make sure it happens. Utilizing external testers offers you the advantage of getting the perspective of someone who may be more like your customers—those who will actually be using your website or software program. They won’t know everything about your business like you do, and will question how things should work to ensure the application is as user-friendly as possible. Oh, yea, and they’re trained in how to break things, which is exactly what you want from a tester.
QA testing is a valuable and necessary step in delivering a great product your customers will want to use. Let a qualified tester find errors in your product. They won’t judge you. Your customers will.

If You Had SAP CRM Skills, What You Add SD or ABAP Next?

May 20th, 2014

This is an interesting question. There’s a lot of ground to cover even within CRM itself, and a lot of folks wouldn’t be concerned with moving beyond a CRM focus. But if someone asked me this question, that means other people are wondering about it too.
What I would do is to pay attention to the integration points between CRM and other areas of SAP while you’re working on CRM projects. See where the “pain” is on CRM project teams, and master that area. CRM ties into so many different areas of SAP that it’s hard to just choose a couple.
But in this case, we’re choosing between SD and ABAP. Those of you who are familiar with my work know that I would never recommend ABAP over another area of SAP if it came down to a coin toss. So, you’re probably expecting me to say SD – and you’re mostly right.
All things being equal, I’d go for the SD-CRM skills combo over ABAP-CRM. Of course, all things are never equal. What would be the exceptions? I would say that if you already have a deep programming background, you might want to consider adding ABAP to your CRM skills.
One good aspect of adding SD is that with so many upgrades pending, work in core areas like SD should be plentiful. Second is that if you understand the functionality in SD and the functionality in CRM, you are a more well-rounded consultant, because you are able to advise your clients on when they should stick with SD and when they should draw on CRM. And of course there are integration points between CRM and SD to get a handle on.

SAP Offers 21st-Century Customer Service to Healthcare Industry

May 19th, 2014

SAP Offers 21st-Century Customer Service to Healthcare Industry

SAP Patient Relationship Management solution was launched by SAP as an offering specially designed for helping healthcare providers to compete for increasingly assertive, knowledgeable and price-sensitive patients. Technology-driven advances in customer service has been instrumental in transforming most industries, hence patients are now demanding the same control over their healthcare experience. Healthcare IT leaders have tried addressing multiple challenges in treatment and payment, but patients have not been able to enjoy the visibility and responsiveness which they have been seeing and experiencing in their growing relationships with retailers or financial institutions. SAP Patient Relationship Management aims at closing the healthcare service quality gap, by putting the patient at the center of individualized care and offering a treatment experience embedded with quality customer service.

A customer-centric culture is extremely important for healthcare providers who are seeking to protect and grow revenues in an increasingly competitive environment. Early the health care industry used to be immune from consumer pressures in all countries, regardless of the regulatory or delivery setting, but now they have to earn the business of consumers who move around and cross international borders to obtain the best value for money. Today, healthcare purchase decisions are similar to those seen in every other industry, and are mostly driven by cost alone. Treatment decisions are taken on basis of peer and network feedback on social media and on overall consumer experience, which is most evident in developments like the rise of medical tourism.

Designed specially, SAP Patient Relationship Management is an integrated offering, which combines the best-practice patient administration and billing functionality of the SAP Patient Management application along with the proven service functionality in the SAP Customer Relationship Management application. Using SAP Patient Relationship Management, healthcare providers will be able to maintain a holistic view of each patient for offering tailor made treatment decisions and offerings.

SAP Patient Relationship Management will help in streamlining the patient experience along the continuum of care and embedded analytics providing performance measurement. Healthcare providers will be able to track their performance and be guided by the solution, take the lead in patient relationships or with conditions where they have proven especially successful. Provider call center staff will enhance the patient experience through immediate response, personalized interaction and speedy resolution.

Additional benefits of SAP Patient Relationship Management include:

  • A one-stop online interaction center with mobile functionality for patients, as they expect in other consumer experiences
  • Optimized staff and resource utilization rates through insight into forecast demand and availability
  • Ongoing patient relationship management, creating better patient experiences that may yield new revenue opportunities as an additional benefit
  • Social media analyses that assist with the design and marketing of treatment offerings based on online trends
